Before I tell you about this newest CD from Slugs and Bugs – I just HAD to share their mission statement (posted on their website).

About Slugs and Bugs

MISSION STATEMENT

You could say our mission is to write great, fun songs that celebrate the truth, beauty, freedom, and love of silliness that is so characteristic of children. But you could also say that we aim to write great, fun songs that help parents to remember how to be kids.

Slugs & Bugs is for kids and parents.  Our children need to learn that life with Jesus is a life of joy and celebration, and we parents need to remember that very same thing.  Slugs & Bugs aims to provide a context for parents and kids to learn and remember together the joy of life in Christ, while also having a super-great time with silly songs about grizzly bears that don’t wear underwear.

The Slugs & Bugs worldview rejects the compartmentalization of life into sacred and secular and declares with great (and silly) gusto that Christ is the head of all things.  He is the head of kite flying and river floating, ice fishing and sky diving, nap taking and diaper changing.

Our small hope is that kids will love the music and parents will too.  Our grand hope is that Slugs & Bugs kids would one day grow up and find it natural to remember Jesus in their homework, in their work, in their friendships and even in the parenting of our grandkids.

My Family’s Review

My youngest child is 7 and my oldest is 16 . . . so at first I thought this CD would be a little bit “young” for my kids.  I was wrong!

We have been playing the CD each night while I make dinner (or even when we should be doing homework) and thoroughly enjoying it!

Each song is quite different and unique – and each of my kids has their own favorite songs.

I love that it starts off with a sweet song called “God makes Messy things Beautiful” – reminding us that God can truly make anything beautiful – even our messes!

I personally love the 3rd song called “I’m Adopted”.  Our youngest child was adopted from Guatemala 4 years ago when she was 3 1/2 years old.  We’ve had many conversations about adoption as she’s tried to grasp the concept and how she fits into this family.  She asked me one day, “Mom, were you adopted?”  At first I said “no” – but then quickly replied – “Actually, I AM adopted!”  I told her about how we are adopted into God’s family as His kids, and then said “Man Wendy – you are REALLY special . . .because you’ve been adopted TWICE!”  She loved that!

There are songs about “Food”, including a silly one called “Mexican Rhapsody”.

And some pico de gallo, please.  What does “pico de gallo” mean?

Beak of the rooster, beak of the rooster.  Sounds kinda pointy!  I don’t want to eat that!

“The Wagon” cracks my 11 year old daughter up – as the singers get silly in the end thinking up crazy things to ride on or in (dinosaur, hippo and rocket-ship) while one of them just “roars” as the sound for each animal (and ship).  🙂

As any mom with toddlers knows . . . your little ones always say “I wanna help”.

No jug is too full, no vase is too breakable.  I’m here to help and that’s unmistakeable.

“Dizzy” talks about that fun game we’ve all played at least once in our lives . . . spinning round and round till you get dizzy!

“Ninja” is something anyone who has a little boy is fully versed in!  And who could resist singing to the Dr. Pepper tune:

I’m a ninja, you’re a ninja, he’s a ninja, she’s a ninja – wouldn’t you like to be a ninja too?

“Where you Gonna Go?” is a great song for your toddler who is learning to use the potty, while the CD’s title song “Under Where?” is hilarious to little ones who just think saying “underwear” is funny (I think that includes ALL little kids)!

“Pajama Drama” is another one of my favorites, as a child tries to understand why his pajamas are not in his top drawer when he needs them.

I’ve got to find my mama. Someone call Obama.  There are no pajamas here in my top drawer.

There are a few other funny songs (“There’s a hole in my sock” and “Lightning bug”), and then the CD ends with 3 sweet songs – “God made you special”, “Sweet baby boy” and “It’s sleepytime”.
