Fun Friday: FREE Kids Workshops at Home Depot

How has your summer gone?  Have you heard “I’m bored” at all?  (if not – I need to talk to you – and you need to share with us how you keep your kids from being bored . . . or at least saying “I’m bored”!)  Need something new to do with your kids (that’s also FREE!)?

Here is something my younger 2 kiddos have enjoyed the last couple months – and has helped keep the “I’m bored” out of their mouths a few times.  (I’m embarrassed to say that I knew about this over 10 years ago . . . but kept forgetting to take my kids, then completely forgot about it for years.  My youngest kids were recently introduced to it this summer by a friend – and loved it!  Wish I had taken my other kids when they were young.  Oh well.)

Home Depot Kids Workshop

Home Depot has FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 – 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Your kids will love learning about tool safety, building something themselves (with a little help from mom or dad sometimes – depending on the age of the child and the craft being built), and will be proud to discover and show off their skills, abilities and creations!

In a short amount of time (less than an hour sometimes), your child will build and be able to keep what they make, and are rewarded with a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, a commemorative pin to put on it (that shows the craft that they made) and a certificate of achievement (and at our HD – a snack and drink.  Last month it was chips and a snow cone)!  Kids love collecting all the pins and displaying them on their own orange Home Depot apron with their name written on it like the real Home Depot employees!

Here are some pics and description of of our last Home Depot Kids Workshop adventure with 2 of my kiddos!

I arrived at Home Depot with 2 very excited kids!  My son was afraid we had missed it (it was close to 12 noon when we got there) as he didn’t see the kids or tables set up outside like last time.  It was probably 95-100 degrees this day – so I was glad it wasn’t outside!  We went indoors and asked where the Kids Worskshop was – and the gentleman said “follow the sounds of hammers banging!”  🙂  We found it right away!

The Home Depot employees handed each of my kids their craft – all bundled up with the supplies and instructions they would need to complete it.  The hammers and glue were on the tables nearby.

My kids preferred working on the hard floor instead of the tables (Mom would have preferred the table!)

Once they finished building their truck, it was time to paint it!  Here is a picture of one of the commemorative pins my daughter received for a previous craft.

Proud to be done building – and now time to paint!

Yes – it can get a bit messy . . . so wear clothes you can get paint on!

All done, got her certificate & pin & now waiting for a yummy treat on a very hot Saturday!

When we were done, we took our crafts home to dry, and were given stickers to add to the trucks at home.  Here are the final creations with their proud creators!

Who can attend?

Whoever likes crafts and building things!  Well – you need to be a kid (or a parent/grandparent/guardian that has little kids . . . just don’t forget to bring them with you!).  🙂  I asked about the ages – and even though the website says ages 5-12 (the ideal ages to truly be able to create and build these things on their own) – I did see younger kids there as well . . . obviously needing more help from mom or dad.

Try it out on Saturday – August 4th, 2012 – at your local Home Depot.  They will be building a cork bulletin board.  (My kids are sad that we will miss this one – as they truly look forward to it all month long!)

You can find out more info on Home Depot’s website – including the date, times and craft they are building during that workshop.

* I wanted to tell you this a week ahead of time – so you didn’t miss it.  Go put it on your calendar right now!  🙂

Let me know if you go & what you think!  Or if you have been – what has your experience been like?  What kinds of crafts have your kids made?

Please share with your friends through the buttons below! Thanks!
