Fun Friday: Costumes & Playing Dress-up . . . It’s more than just for Halloween!

Costumes

Ok – I know it’s not Halloween {um . . . not even close, Lori!}.

But as a mom of 5 kids (+ 1 extra in the pic below!), I have to say – we do have our share of costumes around here!

Many of them are “homemade”, but occasionally we’ve bought some from the store – or my favorite place – thrift stores right after Halloween.  Some thrift stores get the left-overs from stores – with the tags still on them!  It’s hard to beat $1-2 for a brand new costume!

However – every year my kids peruse the catalogs and circulars that come our way – filled with fun new Halloween costumes – and beg me to buy some new ones.  Unfortunately, the answer frequently is “no” (as you can imagine how much that would add up with 5 kids to dress!).  So we use our creative brains God gave us – and I have to say, sometimes my kids surprise me with their ingenuity!

If you are not the crafty or creative type (I’m definitely not the crafty-type mom here!) – then thankfully there are plenty of places to find Kids (and Adult) Halloween costumes . . . or even costumes for other holidays (though . . . dressing up as a tree for Christmas is not something I’d advise!  :)).  However – if you are looking for a family photo like this one (talk about “matching outfits”!) . . . I did find a site online that does carry them – Halloween Mart. {caution:  there are some skimpy costumes for adult women . . . in case that’s not something you want your little ones looking at}

I do have to say though – one of my favorite events where we can see some crazy costumes is the Wicked 10k race that is hosted here every Halloween.  Last year my husband dressed up as Han Solo!  He thought about being Chewbacca . . . but then figured it would be very hot running in at least 10 pounds of fur!  🙂

Playing Dress up

As I said in the beginning . . . I know it’s not Halloween right now . . . but why limit your (possibly expensive) Halloween costumes to just one candy-filled day?  My kids have pulled them out, sometimes on an almost daily basis!  One year I found a “Thing” costume on sale after Halloween . . . and my 4 year old son took many a trip to Walmart in it all throughout winter! 🙂  {why not? 🙂  It made him happy!}

What do your kids like to dress up as?  Have you pulled out your own costumes or “dress ups” to play with them?

One of my daughter’s favorite things we did was when I pulled out my old prom dresses (yes – I still have them.  And yes – they are S-C-A-R-Y!) and I dressed up with her.  We had a lot of fun doing each other’s hair and makeup and just “pretending”!  🙂  Kids need that!

What’s your favorite costume you had/have?
